Afghan Desert
Sunday, September 4, 2011 at 11:28AM Worrying statistics from Afghanistan. In the first six months of the year 24,000 soldiers deserted. 5000 of these (3% of the Army) deserted in June alone. One of the reasons? The military are prohibited by a law enacted by President Karzai from punishing those who desert. I kid you not. Another reason? Poor leadership and corrupt commanders. No surprise there.

More stats from Afghanistan today: "by 2014, Nato expects to have spent $11Billion on Afghan security infrastructure, $10 Billion on military hardware and it estimates it will cost $6 billion a year to maintain." Afghanistan's goverment annual income is less than $2 billion.
Do the math...
