Hotels As Terrorist Targets Part 2

In the first ever post on this blog a while back I highlighted the prevalence of hotels as a favoured terrorist target. Yesterday two more hotels were attacked. Interesting trend again – simultaneous attacks or near simultaneous across a city. Again, like some other hotel attacks these weren’t Vehicle borne IEDs but probably suicide devices. Intriguingly early reports from HMS suggest a terrorist “headquarters” was set up in room 1808 of one hotel. One of the targets, the JW Marriott was attacked with a suicide VBIED in 2005.

One concern might be whether the VBIED threat has been overly prioritised as the sole threat at hotels and other facilities. After all, barrier, ramps, gates and "car bombs" in general are tangible and security managers tend to grasp and want to solve that.

The body-borne threat may need more attention, in regions where the threat is higher and places where business/tourist footfall and concentrations are highest.
