Air France - An Odd Assessment
Wednesday, June 17, 2009 at 9:16PM I'm no conspiracy theorist; quite the opposite, and you can guarantee that every aircraft crash will generate its own conspiracy theory. In terms of terrorism and the latest Air France disaster there are a couple of terrorist related factors:
- There appears to have been a bomb threat to this flight a few days earlier. The aircraft was searched and the incident is now discounted as simply a coincidence.
- Apparently, two names of the passenger list were the same names as alleged wanted or suspected terrorists - this, also, now appears to have been discounted as a coincidence.
The latest assessment coming out seems a little difficult for me to agree with. Post mortem examinations of the bodies and analysis of the spread of the aircraft has resulted in an assessment that the aircraft broke up in flight - i.e it did not impact into the sea as a complete aircraft. The next bit is interesting:
"Experts have all but ruled out a mid-air explosion as the bodies reportedly show no signs of burns."
Now that doesn't necessarily follow in my opinion. A small device, such a Richard Reid's shoe bomb would cause minor burns to bodies in the immediate radius - three or four feet, maybe a little more. But would rupture the skin of the aircraft and that rupture at 35,000ft and at 650mph would be enough to cause the aircraft to fall apart catastrophically. To me, its one step too far to suggest that as there was no burns on the bodies found so far, there was no IED. Burns might be apparent on only a tiny percentage of the passengers
Let me repeat - I'm not a conspiracy theorist, but its still to early to call this and if the call is based solely on the assessment above - that's not enough.
